Book review: Midnight’s Children

The perfect book review

Book of words

When I finally completed Salman Rushdie’s bestselling novel “Midnight’s Children,” I was truly, truly relieved that I persevered till the very last page for it truly is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that left me marveled and humbled by his ability to blur the lines between magic and history.

Set in the postcolonial era, this novel is as much the autobiography of protagonist Saleem Sinai as well as the story of India. Saleem, who was born at the stroke of midnight on India’s independence, inexplicably shared his life’s triumphs and disasters with the fate of his nation. This coincidence also endowed him magical powers in his large cucumber nose to sniff out danger when others were unable to and telepathic powers to connect with other children like him who were born in the early hours of independence, a group which he called “midnight’s children.’

“It is the privilege and the curse of…

Book review: The Fault in Our Stars

Excellent!

Book of words

Even though I have not watched the movie *yet*, but over the past weekend after finishing John Green’s “The Fault in Our Stars,” I LOVED IT so much because it touched on the topic of life’s fragility in such a delicate and exquisite manner it brought tears to my eyes.

Falling sick is possibly everyone’s greatest fear and in one way or another, we can all relate to the contents of the book for we would have experienced it ourselves or witnessed our loved ones being ill, and it always hurts us to see them battling helplessly on the hospital bed.

“The Fault in Our Stars” is a cross between a teenage love story and terminally ill-existentialism narrative, a combination is that bound to melt hearts and minds. For me, the letter below is one of the most beautiful parts of the book and it would surely be a shame if I did…

Book review: Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki And His Years of Pilgrimage

Book of words

Colorless TsukuruI was thrilled to bits when I received Haruki Murakami’s latest book from a friend since it has been almost three years when he released his 1Q84 and it has been highly anticipated by legions of the Japanese author’s fans, including myself. A huge thank you to you know who you are for gifting me with one of the most thoughtful gifts I have received in a long while.

Murakami’s newest offering is as expected oozing with his typical writing style and themes – a lonely man in his mid-thirties feeling displaced in a big city while harboring a deep sense of solitude.

Before jumping the gun, I would like to rave about the gorgeous design for the hardcover version published by Alfred A. Knopf of “Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki And His Years of Pilgrimage”. The dust jacket features five cutout panels, four filled with colors and the last transparent…

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

A Sea Change

Darker Shade

A Darker Shade of Magic

by V.E. Schwab

Rating: 5+ Stars

‘Most people only know one London; but what if there were several? Kell is one of the last Travelers magicians with a rare ability to travel between parallel Londons. There is Grey London, dirty and crowded and without magic, home to the mad king George III. There is Red London, where life and magic are revered. Then, White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. But once upon a time, there was Black London…’

I’m also including Schwab’s own summing up of this novel from Goodreads, as it really made me laugh (and her description of Prince Rhy is spot on).

Magic, Cross-dressing thieves, (Aspiring) pirates, Londons (plural), Sadistic kings (and queens), a royal who is equal parts Prince Harry and Jack Harkness, more magic (blood magic, elemental magic, bad magic, etc. etc.), epic magicky fights scenes…

BOOK REVIEW: GILLIAN FLYNN

Gillian Flynn is a captivating writer. I read “Gone Girl” first, then “Sharp Objects. I couldn’t get enough of her storytelling, so I had to read “Dark Places.” Darkness, twists, turns and suspense kept me coming back for more. If you enjoy a good edge of your seat with a great plot twist, then you too will enjoy these books!

Gone Girl was really full of surprises, lots of twists, and characters with more sides and dimensions than you’d expect. I really couldn’t put this book down. Loved the writing and the story, but the ending was definitely not what I expected it to be. I’d highly recommend it to readers that enjoy suspense, drama, dark humor, and fast-paced action.
